TRANSIT CITY
In December 2009, the City of Toronto held four open houses on the Etobicoke-Finch Avenue West Light Rail Plan, which will run from Yonge Street in Willowdale to Highway 27 in Etobicoke. This light rail service will replace the 36 Finch West TTC bus service currently operating from Finch Station to Humber College.
It will include a 17 km reserved right-of-way along the centre of Finch Avenue, with two LRT tracks running along a raised median in the centre of the road. Two traffic lanes in each direction will be maintained and bicycle lanes will be added. The raised median will be lowered at intersections with traffic signals to allow for left turns onto Finch.
For detailed information about the proposal, including drawings of the proposed streetscape and transit maps, click here to see the PDF presentation slides.
There will be a total of 30 local stops and two underground stations. In Ward 23, the local stops will be located at Yonge St, Talbot Road, Senlac Road, Finchurst Drive, and Bathurst Street. An Eastern terminus will be located at Finch Station, and a Western terminus will be located at Humber College.
Toronto City Council approved an environmental assessment study of this project during it's meeting of January 26 and 27, 2010. The final Environmental Project Report is scheduled to be completed and submitted to the Ontario Ministry of the Environment on March 23, 2010. There will be a 30 day public comment period, followed by a 35 day review and decision period. The Ministry is expected to complete it's assessment on May 31, and if approved, construction would start on this line in 2011.
