Coyotes in the Community

There have been an increased number of coyote sightings in and around Willowdale ravines. Seeing coyotes is considered normal in Toronto. Though they do not generally pose a danger to people, they be dangerous to small pets and caution is wise. Coyotes do not hibernate and are more often spotted in the winter months, usually hunting small mammals and birds (and controlling the rodent population).

If you see a coyote, do not run – make some noise to scare it away. Do not approach or feed the animal. If walking your dog, make sure it says on a leash.

The City does track coyote sightings. They can be reported to 416-338-PAWS (7297), or by email to animalservices@toronto.ca or with anonline form.
