Edithvale Park Expansion (UPDATED) – Meeting June 2

Update (May 2014):

I am pleased to announce that the Toronto District School Board has formally approved my plan to allow community use of the Board’s property close to Edithvale Community Centre. The eastern half of the block will now be available for community recreation programs. This summer, we are planning a number of improvements to the area, including replacing the swing set, repairing the backstop, creating an adult outdoor fitness circuit and adding an outdoor ping pong table. A preliminary vision of the improvements was presented at a community meeting earlier this year. I invite you to join me for a presentation of the final plans on Monday, June 2, 7PM at Edithvale Community Centre (131 Finch Ave W).

Original Post (March 2014):

One of our most important hubs of community activity is about to get even better.  Through the co-operation of Trustee Mari Rutka and Toronto District School Board staff, we are able to expand the amount of programmable open space at Edithvale by borrowing land from the school board. The City will maintain and program the property. This will allow more opportunities for community sports programs run either through the centre, or by interested community groups.

We already have a wonderful new Edithvale Community Centre, along with a bake oven, winter skating rink and soccer field. In December, we had a productive community consultation meeting with residents and are working towards finalizing plans to improve the school board property this summer.

The community priorities were to establish a fitness circuit in the park, add more tables, benches and other seating and explore the idea of establishing an outdoor fire pit for campfires in the summer or to warm up next to the outdoor rink in the winter.  I hope to see many of these additions in place by this coming season.
