The City of Toronto does not accept single serve coffee pods in its Blue Bin Recycling or Green Bin Organics programs. This has come up after it was reported that Keurig Canada was being fined over claims their K-cups were "recyclable." Other companies sell products marked "compostable." Few municipalities in Ontario (including Toronto) actually have the capacity to process these materials meaning that they end up in landfill.
City Council gave Solid Waste staff instruction in 2018 to work on developing a program to include these pods in waste diversion programs. More information on changes to recycling programs is expected to come to Council this year as the City prepares to transition responsibility of recycling to packaging producers.
