Starting this week, the City of Toronto is taking further action to regulate short term rental properties. Moving forward, those renting properties for fewer than 28 consecutive days must register with the City and provide a registration number on any listings on sites such as Airbnb, Expedia or booking.com. Having property owner information on file with bylaw enforcement will allow for more efficient follow-up for by-laws officers and increase owner accountability.
Short term rental hosts can now register online here, and must register by December 31, 2020. The City will also begin collecting the 4% Municipal Accommodation Tax (MAT) starting January 1, 2021, similar to hotel rooms. Short term rentals in Toronto are now only permitted in an house, apartment or condo that is your principal residence. Condo owners should also consult their building bylaws where additional restrictions may apply.
