Staying Active Outside During the Lockdown

In case you missed it last week, Willowdale is home to four natural rinks this winter!

Our office will be providing up to date information on the rinks here. Be sure to check the page often to see which rinks are currently open for use. We will be updating the page weekly with all the most up to date information on rink conditions from now until the end of the season.

As a reminder, due to COVID-19 the following rules are in place for natural rinks across the city:

  1. Physical distancing must be adhered to

  2. All skaters must wear a mask

  3. No hockey is permitted on rinks

  4. There is a 25-person limit for outdoor ice rinks, and

  5. Skaters should only skate with members of their household.

Skating at Mel Lastman Square

While organized programming may not be running, the City is still keeping parks and amenities like skating at Mel Lastman Square open. If you’d like to go skating, you should be aware that the City has increased restrictions due to COVID-19 since the rink opened in late November. As a gentle reminder:

  1. The rink is open daily for unsupervised skating from 10:00 am – 9:30 pm between Monday to Friday and from 10:00 am to 6:00 pm on weekends

  2. Wearing a mask/face covering is required while on and off the ice, waiting in line and in indoor public spaces, including the washrooms that are open in winter

  3. There is a limit of 25 skaters at one time

  4. Skaters must stay 2 metres away from anyone outside their household

  5. John has arranged for the washrooms inside the North York Civic Centre to be open during skate times, although the building itself remains closed

Although booking a time is encouraged, 5 of the spots for each skate time are being held for walk-ons just show up and are willing to wait. You can reserve a time online here, and up to date information on ice conditions is available at

Other Activities

If skating isn’t your thing, you might want to consider some of these other options to keep you and your family active this winter:

  1. While you may have a favourite local hill to sled on, Toronto will have 23 official toboggan hills open across the city. The closest hill to Willowdale is at Graydon Hall Park at Don Mills and the 401, but be sure to take a look at the list and find a hill that’s convenient for you.

  2. We are opening up the city’s golf courses, including Don Valley Golf Course for walking and snowshoeing. Trails range in distance from 1 kilometre to 2.5 kilometres.

  3. The City is keeping its six disc-golf locations open through the winter, including one at ET Seaton Park just south of us.
