Update (June 20, 2017):
Many thanks to the Mount Pleasant Group of Cemeteries who have donated approximately 13 acres of ravine land to the City at the western end of York Cemetery. This land is adjacent to Bathurst Park, Burnett Woods and the Hinder Property in the West Don River Valley. We are continuing to talk with residents about future use of the property, which will remain in its natural state, once the City releases its Ravines strategy later this year.
Making this land public is part of the Cemetery’s celebration of Canada’s 150th birthday. Residents may have seen the new Cemetery entrance and walkway off of Beecroft Road including a recently unveiled monument to recipients of the Victoria Cross, the highest award within the Canadian Honours System. This monument is the first of its kind in Canada.
The community has been invited to celebrate with an official ribbon cutting at the new monument on Sunday, June 25 at 2 PM. We look forward to seeing this feature formally added to our community.
Original Post (February 25, 2016):
York Cemetery has a long and proud history of supporting the growth and evolution of the North York community.
As part of Canada’s 150th anniversary celebration in 2017, Mount Pleasant Group of Cemeteries plans to donate approximately 13 acres of land at the west end of the York property to the City of Toronto for the creation of a nature park. The new park will feature pedestrian pathways and other natural features and will serve local residents for generations to come.
To hear more about these plans, staff from the cemetery and landscape design firm Janet Rosenberg & Studio will be hosting a public meeting on Wednesday, March 9 starting at 7 PM at the funeral centre chapel of York Cemetery (160 Beecroft Road).
John will be attending to discuss with residents how to best complement the work being done on this property with the adjacent Burnett Woods and Hinder properties. He will also address how this work may fit with the Ravine Strategy currently being completed by the City.
Residents interested in this topic unable to attend on this date can contact Markus in John’s office.
